| Sifu Deru,
Shawn Xiangyang Liu is the 31st generation descendant, Grand Master
of the Shaolin Temple, Henan province and direct disciple of the
Shaolin Temple Spiritual Abbot, Great Master Upper Su Lower Xi (Su
Xi), the only remaining Shaolin Fighting Monk Legend, Great
Master of the Shaolin Temple (pre-communist) China. Master Liu is
also known as the iron leg. Liu started training in Shaolin,
traditional medicine and Qigong in Shaolin Temple, China when he was
a very young child. Later he studied many other internal arts.
Martial Arts Background
He intensively studied both Yang and Chen styles in Taijiquan. He
is one of the few high level students of the late Grand Master Fu
Zhongwen of 4th generation Yang family Taijiquan. He went to Chen's
village over 10 times to study the Chen family's Taiji with the best
Chen style Grand Masters, including Gu Liuxing and Chen Zhenglei.
His studies included many other internal and external arts such as
Daojia (Taoist) Qigong, Xingyi, Bagua, and Sanda/Sanshou.
As a Martial Artist and
Fighter, Master Liu has fought and won numerous professional fights
in both Chinese traditional bare-handed fighting and modern Sanshou.
He is one of the few undefeated professionals out of China and has
coached martial arts teams in both China and the U.S. - producing
many outstanding martial artists and Sanshou fighting National and
International Champions.
He is the head coach for the USA National Sanshou Team and the head
of the USA Sanshou-Kungfu federation. He has conducted seminars on
Qigong, Taiji, Shaolin Kungfu and stress management in hospitals,
companies and special police forces all over China, Japan, Europe
and the US. He directed the Sanshou competition at the 1995 World
Wushu Championship. He has produced and directed the US Open
International Martial Arts Championships and K. Superstar-Art of War
production (the only professional Sanshou outside of China) since
1994.
He has been the chairman of
the Pan American Sanshou technical committee. He serves as
President of East-West International Culture Exchange Inc. and is
the director and head master of the Liu Institute of Shaolin-Taiji &
Health-Wellness. He is also an exercise physiologist.
Medical Background
In the late 70's, Sifu Liu entered the
Traditional Chinese Medical School of Wuhsu, Anhui. After
graduation, he served in both traditional Chinese hospitals and
Chinese-Western rehabilitation hospitals as an
acupuncture/acupressure and Qigong physician. Using these treatment
methods, in addition to herbal medicine and Chinese balanced foods,
he has brought thousands of patients back to their health.
Sifu Liu now offers his medical services to clients and integrates
the practices of both the Eastern and Western world, providing
optimum care and training. In the last two years, he held seminars
that toured over 22 cities across the United States and Pan America
including Wizards of the Coast in Seattle, Center of Chinese
Medicine, George Washington University Medical Center in Washington
D.C., and the Brazil Wushu Federation in Brazil. In addition to his
Chinese education, Master Liu also holds a BA degree in English
Literature and an MS degree in Exercise Physiology from the United
States.
